The first step in the PhD admission procedure in India is finding an institute that offers PhD programs in your subject. While the minimum requirement is a Master’s degree with the required percentage of marks,Top Institutions like IITs, IIMS ISC, etc; usually admit students who cleared UGC NET, GATE, or CSIR NET. However, many other institutions admit students without UGC NET and other National-level entrance exams.
If you meet the PhD admission requirements of the university, you will be called to attend the entrance exam (exempted for UGC NET, JRF Mphil, etc.) and then interview. Some universities also ask the candidate to present their research proposal or SOP. After evaluating your academic proficiency, subject knowledge, and overall fit for the Ph.D. program, the institute will finalize the selection list, and if selected, you will be asked to complete other formalities like payment, etc
Qualifications For PhD Degree In India
Most of the students who plan to pursue doctorate programs are confused about the qualifications required to join a Ph.D. program. As per the UGC regulations, PhD aspirants must have a Master’s degree in a relevant field with a minimum of 55% marks or an equivalent grade. Applicants belonging to reserved categories like SC/ST and OBC, etc, are eligible for a 3- 5% concession in marks. However, it is the minimum academic eligibility for a Ph. admission in India; some universities prefer applicants holding UGC NET/M Phil or those who have published journals in research publications, especially premier institutes that offer Doctorate programs on a regular mode. Few institutions also offer Ph.D. degrees to candidates with work experience after completing four years of bachelor’s programs in specific fields.
